Adaptability Canada establishes a one-stop accessible construction solution for the consumer, public and private sectors

Jan 21st, 2014 6:46 AM

(January 21, 2014, Toronto, ON) For the first time in Canada, there is a single-source provider for meeting the growing needs of Canada’s large aging population and people with disabilities. Adaptability Canada (ADC), through innovative and strategic partnerships with leading Canadian companies, offers a comprehensive and holistic approach to providing accessibility at home, at work and in the community. Capable of serving the needs of larger organizations in the public and private sectors, as well as individual homeowners, ADC provides end-to-end solutions including: accessible property assessments, renovation and construction services, equipment and installation, project financing, emergency preparedness and maintenance of accessible equipment. Adaptability Canada was founded as a response to three converging trends affecting all four sectors of Canadian society -- consumers, non-profits, commercial and public:
  1. Accessible legislation, including the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), mandates that all Ontario businesses, non-profits and public organizations must meet new standards of accessibility.
  2. National Aging in Place strategy. Every layer of government is preparing to help support Canada’s growing senior segment in an effort to create a stronger integrated health care system and improve their quality of life at home as they choose to age in place.
  3. The rise of more socially responsible strategies and programs by both public and private organizations to improve service to the public, staff and customers alike.
Adaptability Canada CEO, Jeff Wilson, observed, “The AODA and the proliferation of similar legislation across Canada opened our eyes to the practical issues and challenges placed on businesses and public organizations trying to understand and conform to legislation of this type.” Wilson stated, "While the AODA only affects new construction or major renovations, many private and public organizations want to avoid the financial or reputational liability of not being able to provide an accessible environment or even worse, a property that poses the potential of physical harm." "Despite the complexity associated with ensuring accessibility, forward-thinking organizations are already looking at how to become completely barrier free, believing it to be the right thing to do as opposed to just another cost of doing business,” Wilson noted. “Many of these organizations look to the expertise of ADC to guide them through the planning and construction phases.” In Canada there is an increased demand for accessibility-focused renovations in the residential market for Canadians who are caring for loved ones with disabilities or want to age at home rather than in a private or government facility. Right now consumers have to achieve their goals using multiple sources. ADC’s mission is to make it easy by giving consumers a single place to get everything they need to make their home accessible, safe and enjoyable. Together, these trends are driving tremendous change at all levels of society. ADC believes that the only way to accomplish the goal of a barrier-free, age-friendly society is through collaboration. Their objective is to improve the quality of life of Canadians at home, at work and in the community. For Adaptability Canada, providing comprehensive accessible construction solutions is just a start. ADC has made charitable giving part of its culture and an integrated part of its business model. To that end, every residential and commercial project will give partial proceeds back to the community with a standardized charitable donation to be administered by an outside non-profit agency. Currently, Adaptability Canada’s operations are focused on serving the Ontario market, but it plans to begin expanding service across Canada by the end of 2014.
