Media Release – For immediate release Ontario’s Chief Energy Conservation Officer recognizes efforts to create a culture of conservation (Sudbury, ON, September 27, 2007) Peter Love, Ontario’s Chief Energy Conservation Officer, today awarded Cambrian College with his prestigious Certificate of Recognition for their outstanding commitment to conservation. The ceremony took place during Cambrian’s one-day “Living Building” Conference and Trade Show, held at the College’s e-Dome. The event is geared to showcase Cambrian’s Sustainable Energy Centre, a research and education centre in the planning stages, and the College’s new Energy Systems Technology Program. “By building the Sustainable Energy Centre and conducting an Energy Systems Technologist Program, Cambrian is opening the door for studying the many different ways we can conserve electricity and ensure a sustainable future,” said Love. “I congratulate Cambrian for allowing the kind of artistic freedom required to design this sustainable, energy efficient centre, and contributing to a culture of conservation.” The SEC will also provide a testing ground for others in Northern Ontario, to study and produce sustainable energy systems and green building technology. Students from the Energy Systems Technology Program will assist these businesses at the Energy Centre. John Hood, who accepted the Certificate of Recognition from Love, is the Sustainable Energy Centre’s Project Manager. “I have to thank Cambrian for being forward-looking enough to see the value of the Centre,” he said. “People who will come to the Centre to work on sustainable energy solutions will do so in an energy efficient environment where they will see the benefits of sustainability everywhere they look.” Because the Centre’s mandate is to promote sustainable energy, the Centre will aim to exceed the highest Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) rating, and achieve a “Living Building” standard. If achieved, the Sustainable Energy Centre would be the first Living Building in North America.
